Permes is;  a registered Cattery with TICA (The International Cat Association)  and a C.F.A (Cat Fanciers' Association). Registered Cattery of  Excellence and feel proud, To Preserve, Perpetuate and Promote the Applehead type Siamese Cats.  We at Permes strive for excellence and work diligently to improve and strengthen our lines.  Our major commitment is to preserve these wonderful cats from being genetically diluted and forgotten.  All of our cats are bred for the Applehead type and are selectively chosen for breeding to improve Health, Temperament, Intelligence, Personality, Conformation, and Eye Color.  The Traditional Applehead Siamese has always been a medium large,  robust bodied cat with a slightly rounder than modified wedge head.  We are sure that many of you remember this type of Siamese as a child.  Applehead style Siamese have been replaced by their modern contemporaries, which are more commonly known as Wedge Head (Show) type.  What makes the Applehead Siamese so unique is their dog like behavior.  They are highly intelligent and very personable cats that follow you around the house to stay close to you.  As a parent I can tell you first hand that they are great with kids and other pets.  They are docile and affectionate and easy to train.  Our Motto is: sound mind and sound body.  Therefore, our kittens are well socialized from the beginning to give them a head start in life.  We are not a large Cattery, but are fancier/hobbyists of the "Old Fashioned" Siamese Cats.  We breed several colors points such as, Seal, Chocolate, Blue, Lilac and we are proud to offer all shades of Lynx Points, the SNOW TIGERS of the Siamese breed.  Definitely GORGEOUS!  All of our adult cats are feline viral paneled (blood tests) are run on all our cats to ensure that our cats are disease free.  Our cats are negative for Felv, and FIV.  Our kittens are registered with CFA.

I recently added a couple Lynx Point queens to my breeding program.  They were born here and are out of Belina (Balinese/Javanese queen).

My Comments:

If breeding to conform to ridiculous modern show standards for the sake of winning ribbons means I have to give up my passion to preserve the Old Style Siamese; I say NOT. I don't care what some of these purebred cat associations try to enforce in terms of breed standards. I will continue to breed happy, healthy and beautiful Old Fashion Siamese cats just like the ones I grew up with. My customers love them and I frankly wouldn't have it any other way. I've dedicated the last 15 years of my life to resurrect, preserve, improve and promote a dying breed like the Balinese Cat. Twenty years ago when I started my search for Traditional Siamese cats there were only a dozen registered breeders in the country (USA) advertising in Cat Fancy Magazine, this is before the Internet, which made it nearly impossible for me to locate good Old Fashion Style Siamese cats, but even harder to find was the Balinese cat. You see, long haired Siamese kittens turned up in pure Siamese litters for years, but were given away as undesirable. The reason for this was because breeders of Siamese were concerned their cats purity would be in question and thus started the campaign to stop breeding Siamese cats carrying the long hair gene. Unfortunately with this strict selection process came the decline of the Long Haired Siamese (Balinese) and the beginning of a physical transformation of the Siamese. Breeders first started by removing all long haired carriers out of their breeding program and bred Siamese cats with tighter, shorted coats and of course then came the more slender type Siamese conformation and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, the Balinese breed (a.k.a. Long Haired Siamese) suffered and was nearly extinct because of this selection process. I'm here to preserve the integrity of the Old Fashion Siamese cat even if they carry the long hair gene and if means producing a long haired kitten out of some of my Siamese registered cats ..... so be it. Had it not been for myself and a few other dedicated preservationist breeders here in the USA; Balinese cats might have seized to exist today. Many people prefer the Balinese (long haired Siamese) over the Siamese because Balinese cats tend to have gentler / calmer dispositions while retaining all of their cousin's characteristics.

Breeders who claim to preserve the Old Style Siamese yet contradict themselves by changing what is true to the breed aren't really preserving. They are doing away with history. A history that is traced back several hundred years. We can't have it both ways; preserving means to keep intact and maintain its original form, so why fix something that isn't broken? Something else to keep in mind; this new registered name (Thai Cats) which is supposed to represent the Old Style Siamese cats is a change in the wrong direction. Cats registered as Thai cats are typically cats with short pedigrees of unknown origin. Once again you are taking away instead of preserving.

Thank you,

Louis

Allergies

After many years of breeding Siamese and Balinese and suffering from pretty severe allergies myself, I can attest to the lessened allergic reaction to Siamese & Balinese; making this breed much more tolerable by individuals affected by cat dander, which is what triggers allergies . Soon after my initial contact with my first Siamese cat as a child I noticed that my allergic reaction wasn't quite as severe as it was with other cats. I still sneezed; got watery eyed and breathing was labored, but not to the full extent of going into an asthma attack. Also I discovered shortly into my breeding hobby that my cat allergy attacks were very infrequent compared to other breeds I had been exposed to in the past. I spent all of my childhood highly allergic to cats, so I thought I would never be able to be around a cat, let alone one day become a breeder of cats. Today, I am still sensitive to most cats; even my Siamese and I noticed I can only be around very few cats in one place because the concentration of dander will cause me to start wheezing, which is why I keep only 2 to 3 cats together in any one room. Fortunately for me and many others who are allergic to cats; the Siamese and Balinese breed produce less FEL D1 a protein which is responsible for causing an IgG or IgE reaction in sensitive humans (either as an allergic or asthmatic response). Siamese and Balinese breeders have thought that the Siamese and Balinese may have reduced cat allergens called FEL D1. This allergen is extremely potent. Secretions from the glands of the skin are the primary source of FEL D1, but it is also deposited on the fur through the saliva when they clean themselves. Eventually the allergen flakes off and becomes airborne to trigger the symptoms that characterize allergies to cats. Feline allergen levels vary within the Siamese and Balinese breed, and human reactions to this allergen vary considerably depending on the person's level of sensitivity to the allergen. Please remember, the term hypoallergenic means "causes less allergic response".. Judging by my 21 years of breeding and my own allergy condition I can honestly say that 99% of my customers including allergy sufferers have not had any negative allergic reactions to their Siamese or Balinese cats.

Please note:

Cats produce, on average, 2-7 µg of Fel d 1 per day.[ Studies have shown that intact males produce Fel d 1 in levels higher than castrated males, leading to the assumption that Fel d 1 is hormonally regulated by testosterone.[ Neutered males produce Fel d 1 in levels similar to females (both intact and spayed females produce Fel d 1 in similar levels). Even though females and neutered males produce Fel d 1 in lower levels, they still produce enough to cause allergic symptoms in sensitive individuals.

The Cats of Egypt

The domestic cat became highly regarded by Egyptian civilization as an animal of awe and wonder. Originating between five and six thousand years ago, domesticated cats came to be praised for their excellent mouse hunting abilities. The Egyptians found cats fascinating, even regarding them as godlike. Because cats were deeply respected, they were often mummified and even buried in great tombs with their owners. Finally, the Egyptian battle of Pelusium illustrates, better than any other example, the importance Egyptians placed on cats.
Indeed, so highly regarded were cats in Egyptian society that it was considered a high crime to kill a cat, punishable by death. Bastet was the proctress of cats. The Ancient Egyptians had a great respect for cats since they protected the grain from mice and rats. Rats can also cause disease.  When a cat died, the family mourned it, shaving their eyebrows to mark their sadness. Cats were sometimes mummified, like people, and their mummies have been found. Families owning cats took care that they received attention and respect.

Deep respect was given to cats even after they died. Whenever a household cat died, the entire family would go through a period of grief, shaving their eyebrows to mark their sadness. Deceased cats were very often mummified and entombed with fine jewelry and treasures; a custom usually reserved for only the most powerful and wealthy. Mummified rats and mice have even been found in cats' tombs, signaling the Egyptian belief in a cat afterlife

Her Role

"The Tearer" is first and foremost a protectress; specifically of the royal house and the Two Lands.
According to Herodotus, Bast was a happy and benign Deity who brought good fortune, music, dance and joy to all. Statues of cats are commonly passed off as facsimiles of Bast, but this is incorrect. The cat was indeed her sacred animal and the people of the time tended to see the Goddess in every cat that walked past, but her original depiction was as a royal lady or priestess with a cat's head. In addition to the symbols already discussed, her other accoutrements were the Aegis, a kind of small protective apron, and a basket often containing kittens. Bast expressed the qualities of the lion or cat family, beauty of movement, agility, strength, caution, fidelity to the pride, etc., all of which could equally be interpreted at the spiritual level.

During the New Kingdom (1539-1075 BC), she became equated with Sekhmet, the lioness deity of war.

Into the Greek period, She would be equated with the virgin huntress Artemis and considered the protectress of children and pregnant mothers, musicians and a goddess of all sorts of excess.

Offerings

Thousands of small cat sculptures, probably left with offerings to the Temple by devotees,  have also been recovered at Bubastis. sweet liquids and foodstuffs mint, catnip, honey, raw meat, perfumes and ointments (especially in the "bas" jars which are a pun on Her name). Never offered: cats (The penality for killing a cat was getting killed !)

Short Information on Bastet

Bast ( Bastet, Bastis, Bubastis, Pacht, Ubast) is a name well-known in the West.  She was responsible for Joy, Music, and Dancing, also Health and Healing.  She also protected humans against contagious diseases and evil spirits.

Her cult can be traced back to about 3200 BC,  and she became a national deity when Bubastis became the capital of Egypt in about 950 BC.  Her origin is said to be in this city Bubastis,  although her association with the lion-goddess Sekhmet makes it likely that her cult was also celebrated at Memphis.  Temple honoring Bast were found at Bubastis, Memphis-Sakkara and Dendera.

Cats, as manifestations of Deity, were sacred; they protected the grain from mice and rats.  Killing a cat was punished with death.  Bast is the daughter and/or wife of Ra, the God of the Sun.

The Framed Painted Papyrus above is a replica of the original Museum piece dating back to ancient Egypt. If you would like to obtain any of the Museum quality Replicas of Bastet on this page, please feel free to contact me.  I own and operate a small Art Gallery in Poulsbo named Ascend Art and I carry Egyptian Imported Genuine Papyrus's as well as bronze, other quality  statues of Bastet.
